What is a technical curtain?

A technical curtain is a project textile whose performance is measurable and contractual: acoustic absorption coefficient, blackout factor, thermal resistance, fire rating. Unlike a standard decorative curtain, it is specified against a brief — technical specifications, FF&E brief or operating programme — and its compliance engages both the specifier and the building owner.

Several functions are frequently combined in one item: a 4-star hotel room curtain today is typically blackout, thermal and M1-rated, with an acoustic sheer on a second track.

How does a thermal curtain work?

A thermal curtain traps a still layer of air between the glazing and the room. A lined make-up with interlining, running from ceiling to floor and generously overlapping the window, significantly reduces heat loss through glazing in winter and solar gain in summer.

Acoustic curtains: treating reverberation without construction work

Absorption or insulation: two different problems

Acoustic absorption reduces reverberation inside a space (a noisy restaurant, a tiring open-plan office, an unintelligible meeting room). Sound insulation stops noise travelling between two spaces. Textiles excel at absorption; for insulation they are a complement. A good specifier sizes the textile on the fabric's weighted absorption coefficient (alpha w), its weight per m² and the fullness of the pleats. Does an acoustic curtain replace ceiling treatment?

No, it complements it. On many renovation projects, textiles are the only absorbent surface that can be added without construction work: a real, immediate gain in reverberation, at a fraction of the cost of an acoustic ceiling.
